Kaella Winery is “A Hobby that got out of control” according to Dave Butner, owner and winemaker. Kaella is a combination of his daughters names; Katelyn and Ellen. Dave’s path to being a winemaker began with home beer brewing for 20 or so years and he eventually started making wine beginning with a home wine making kit. Though the wine was not that great Dave kept taking the next steps in his garage. He also comes from the Boeing Winemaker’s Club; winning a Double Gold for his Syrah. His passion is for red blends and he believes that the quality of the grapes is of utmost importance. The wines are handcrafted and Dave wants to maintain a small boutique winery producing high quality wines. He plans to release his wines fall 2010.
Blend#1 wine is a Bordeaux blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, & 5%Cab Franc, all from the Red Mountain AVA. It will be bottled in the spring and released in the fall of 2010. It didn’t have much of a nose on it but the flavors were amazing. Lot’s of rich red and black fruit.
Wine #2 is a delicious Merlot with 75% Merlot and 25% Cab blend with flavors of ripe red fruit and a taste of chocolate.
Kaella will be right next door to Patterson Cellars. Kaella will be sharing space with Convergence Zone, Lauren Ashton Celars, and Gecko Wine Company. Look for them to open up sometime in April. You can follow Dave on Twitter KaellaWinery.
