Lake Washington Institute of Technology is offering you a chance to step outside of Woodinville and Washington to taste wines of the world.
“Wines of the World” Classes @ Lake Washington Institute of Technology
Curious as to why wines from France taste different than wines from Washington, Oregon, and California? Or, perhaps you desire more information about the world of wine for use in your wine-related professional and/or personal pursuits? Then this class is for you! This course offers an in-depth survey of wine, winemaking techniques, and grape varietals across the globe. Over 12 consecutive Wednesday nights (beginning Jan 8th, 2014), we will explore the history of wine by region, including a focus on viticulture practices and wine-making styles. Regional influences of climate, various soil types, and the concept of terroir are also explored. *This course will include periodic, guided wine tastings – participants must be 21 years of age or older.*
Upon successful completion of this course participants will be able to:
Identify the major wine producing countries and regions throughout the world, describe the various types of wine they produce, and appreciate each region’s differing laws and nomenclature especially as expressed on wine labels.
Recognize the major wine grape varietals and explain their significance in both regional and worldwide wine production.
Explain how various physical factors (soil type, climate, elevation, etc.) factor into a wine’s characteristics and methods of production.
Define the concept of terroir and describe its influence, or lack thereof, on worldwide wine production.
Differentiate between new world and old world styles of wine using sensory evaluation and theoretical assessment.
Describe how wine is made and account for such variants as: table wine, dessert wine, sparkling wine, and fortified wine.
Appreciate the similarities and differences within the world’s major wine producing regions and apply that knowledge towards future wine-related professional and educational endeavors.
Course Specifics:
This is a “for-credit” course provided by the Lake Washington Institute of Technology – a fully accredited member of the State of Washington University and College System.

The new Wine Certificates Program at Lake Washington Institute of Technology offers two new Wine Certificates of Completion:
* The Wine Business Certificate
* The Beverage Management Certificate
The new Wine Business Certificate is designed for those students interested in pursuing various careers in the Wine Retail, Wholesale and Production Industries – including Tasting Room Management. Students will acquire a base knowledge of worldwide wine types and viticulture practices while developing savvy wine sales, business and marketing techniques. All courses are led by industry professionals and this program’s condensed class schedule allows for Certificate Completion in as few as 2 quarters of study.
The new Beverage Management Certificate is designed for those students interested in pursuing careers as Sommeliers and Restaurant Beverage Managers. Guided by industry professionals, participants will acquire worldwide wine knowledge with a focus on northwest wines, beer, and spirits, and will develop traditional and contemporary food and beverage pairing skills. Additionally, students will become proficient in all aspects of formal wine tasting, assessment and service. This program’s condensed class schedule allows for Certificate Completion in as few as 2 quarters of study.
