Whidbey Island Winery: Day Trip from Seattle

by Shona Milne on July 14, 2010

I took a day trip up to Whidbey Island recently. I went up I-5 and crossed Deception Pass and then meandered down the island. I stopped off at Lavender Wind Farm, had lunch out on the pier at Coupville and poked around the shops for a bit. I also stopped in at Greenbank Farm but the winery was not open. Greenbank Farm had a wine shop and you could taste some wine. I did have a taste of Greenbank Cellars Cab Franc 02 and it was nice.

My final stop on Whidbey Island was Whidbey Island Winery. I really enjoyed my stop here and it’s only a few minutes away from the ferry.  They have some nice wines and some nice prices. I really enjoyed their Madeleine Angevine, Dolcetto, and Composition. The Dolcetto kind of slaps your tongue around with big berry flavors. The Composition is a smooth Bordeaux blend with red cherry and cedar flavors. I took home a bottle of both of these wines. I also had some time to talk with Assistant Winemaker Leah Waaramaki.
